Fabrizio Caola
Professor and Tutorial Fellow in Physics
Biography
I am a Professor in the Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics and a Tutorial Fellow at Wadham.
Before coming to Oxford, I was a graduate student in Italy (University of Milano) and then I've spent some time in the US (Johns Hopkins University), Switzerland (CERN) and in Durham (Institute for Particle Physics Phenomenology). You can find more information about my academic journey in my cv.
My research focuses on the theory of fundamental interactions. Specifically, I use quantum field theory -- a powerful framework that combines quantum mechanics and Einstein's special relativity -- to try and understand subtle quantum effects that play a key role for investigations at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. This involves both physics insight and interesting mathematics, and its end goal is to use data that the LHC produces to deepen our understanding of the fundamental forces and particles that govern our universe. You can find more information about my research on my department web-page.
At Wadham, I teach the 2nd year Quantum Mechanics class, and the 3rd year Nuclear and Particle Physics class. In the Department, I teach a module of the "Standard Model and Beyond" class in the Master Course in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics (4th year). I am also the Director of Graduate Studies for Theoretical Physics.
When I'm not doing Physics, I enjoy reading a good book, listening to music and playing the piano.
